LUCAS AGAINST THE BEST IN THE WORLD
Brazilian Lucas Di Grassi's exceptional season continues to reverberate. The most traditional election in the motorsport segment in the world, the traditional ranking of the British magazine Autosport placed the Formula E world champion as the 16th best driver of the season – and the only Brazilian driver among the top 40. Always pointing to the 50 best campaign of the year , the election indicated Sergio Sette Câmara from Minas Gerais as the 43rd place in 2018. Câmara entered the list for the first time, while Di Grassi rose eight positions compared to 2017.
Still in 2018, this recognition joins the Golden Helmet, promoted by Racing Magazine, and the awards for Best Brazilian Driver and Best Driver of the Formula E World Championship, in the election among Internet users of the specialized site Grande Prêmio. The Autosport newsroom highlighted Di Grassi's strong campaign after Audi solved the problem in the electrical system that made the Brazilian reach the fifth of the twelve races of the year with zero points. In that race, Lucas came out last and finished ninth, starting a streak of scoring that would see him set an incredible record of seven straight podiums (two wins and five second places).
The Autosport newsroom about the Lucas campaign suggests that the history of the FE World Championship, of which Di Grassi still ended as runner-up, could have been another if the technical problems had not prevented the Brazilian from scoring in one-third of the championship events. The publication also highlighted Lucas' three Stock Car victories and his quick adaptation to the unknown Mazda used by the Brazilian to take second place overall on his debut at the prestigious Petit Le Mans.
“The Autosport election is the closest thing to a world ranking and I'm very happy for this ranking, which put me in very good company”, said Lucas, highlighting his position among the best in the world. “I think that a driver always has to trust his work, because we are in a sport that demands a lot from the psychological part of the competitors. And public recognition, like this one from Autosport, the Golden Helmet and the Best Brazilian Driver and Best Formula E Driver awards certainly reinforce any driver's determination. Thanks again for supporting my work and rooting for me this year. I hope to deserve the public's attention and affection again in 2019.”
Di Grassi returns to the track on January 12th, for the second round of the Formula E World Championship Five days later, Lucas and Hélio Castroneves will form the Brazilian duo in the famous Race of Champions, a test that will bring together top riders of different modalities in the traditional Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez, on the outskirts of Mexico City.
