DI GRASSI AT A DECISIVE TIME IN FORMULA E
With ten victories and 30 podiums (55% of the total number of races disputed by the category), the Brazilian Lucas Di Grassi is considered the greatest driver in the history of the Formula E World Championship. a month in Berlin (Germany), the ever-increasing feat count only seems to further motivate the Audi Sport team driver, who this Saturday enters the track to fight for the lead and get closer to the second championship. Champion of 2017, runner-up in 2018 and third place in 2015 and 2016, Lucas is six points from the current leader of the tournament, the Frenchman Jean-Eric Vergne (DS Techeetah team), who totals 102 points.
Only Di Grassi and Vergne won more than one race this season: Lucas in Berlin and Mexico City, while the French driver won the races in Sanya (China) and Monaco. With a total of 84 points still at stake in the three finals of the Formula E World Championship for those who win, nail poles and the best laps, Di Grassi knows he needs to beat not only Vergne, but several other drivers on the talented Formula grid E.
“There are about ten drivers with a chance to fight for the title yet, although more realistically I think the top five have more conditions. Even with only three races to go, in a season of thirteen races ”, says Di Grassi. “In this context, leaving Switzerland with a good result, which does not necessarily have to be a victory, is the most important thing. The goal is to reach the double round in New York in mid-July, with real chances of being a champion. In our team's view, it's either that or nothing ”, adds the Brazilian.
Di Grassi won the historic Formula E race held in Switzerland last year, held at Zurich streets. Until then, motorsport had been banned from the country since the tragic accident that killed more than 80 people in the 1955 Le Mans 24 Hours. But the 2019 track will be another one. “This year we are going to compete in Bern, on a totally different track,” says the Audi Sport Brazilian. “It is the first time that we are going to run there. It is a track very different from all that we use in Formula E, especially the uphill and downhill stretches, a detail that will really separate the men from the boys. We did a lot of training on the simulator, but nothing can simulate the cold in the belly that you feel on a track with sudden elevation changes. For the audience, it will be great to watch. For the pilots, a challenge apart ”, sums up Di Grassi.
